Polarised lenses get most of the attention.

They reduce glare and soften harsh reflections, and on bright days they can feel more comfortable.

But they’re not always the better option.

There are situations where polarised lenses can actually get in the way, especially when you’re relying on screens or layered glass.

That’s where non-polarised lenses tend to make more sense.

Screens and Modern Driving

A lot of modern vehicles now use digital displays and heads-up projections on the windscreen.

Polarised lenses filter light in a specific direction, which can interfere with how these displays are seen, causing parts of the screen to dim or disappear depending on the angle.

You’ll notice it when you tilt your head and something that was clear suddenly fades.

Non-polarised lenses don’t have that issue, keeping everything visible and consistent when you’re relying on speed, navigation, or alerts.


In the Cockpit

In commercial aircraft, the windscreen is layered and electrically heated, not a single sheet of glass.

Polarised lenses don’t work well in that environment. They create distortion through the windscreen and can cause digital displays to darken or disappear depending on the angle.

That’s why pilots flying airliners and jets use non-polarised lenses.

In smaller aircraft, it’s different.

Windscreens are typically perspex, not layered glass, and displays aren’t affected in the same way, so polarised lenses can be used without issues.


On the Water

Marine environments rely heavily on electronics now. Chart plotters, radar, depth sounders and engine data are all displayed on screens.

Polarised lenses can interfere with those displays in the same way, causing parts of the screen to lose contrast or disappear depending on how you’re looking at them.

Non-polarised lenses keep everything stable and readable, which is what you want when you’re navigating.


On the Road

Most modern bikes have moved to digital dashboards.

They’re bright, clean, and easy to read, unless you’re wearing polarised lenses. In certain positions, parts of the display can dim or black out entirely.

It’s subtle, but noticeable. Non-polarised lenses remove that issue, so your dash stays clear regardless of your position.

Polarised lenses are great at reducing glare, especially around water or highly reflective surfaces.

But they also filter light in a way that can interfere with screens and layered materials.

Non-polarised lenses offer a more consistent, natural view across different environments, particularly when visibility and information matter.
