UV Protection, Explained Properly
Darker the better?
Most people assume darker lenses mean better protection. They don’t.
A lens can be very dark and still let harmful UV through. When you wear dark lenses, your pupils open up. If UV isn’t properly blocked, more harmful light gets in — not less.
What UV400 means
UV400 means the lens blocks light up to 400 nanometres, covering both UVA and UVB.
In simple terms:
it blocks 100% of harmful UV.
This is the baseline any proper pair of sunglasses should meet.
Lens category explained
Lens category has nothing to do with UV protection.
It’s about how much visible light
is reduced.
- Category 0–1: minimal tint
- Category 2: moderate sun
- Category 3: high sun, everyday use
- Category 4: extreme glare (not for driving)
Category 3 is the standard for daily wear. It reduces
brightness enough for comfort without making things too dark.
What actually matters
Good lenses do two things:
Block UV completely (UV400) and manage visible light for comfort (Category 3).
All VANDA lenses are:
UV400 protected & Category 3
Built to block harmful light, while keeping vision clear and natural.
