UV protection, explained properly


UV protection is one of the most important features of a pair of sunglasses, yet it is also one of the easiest to misunderstand.

A dark lens may feel protective because it reduces visible brightness. A polarised lens may feel more advanced because it reduces reflected glare. Neither feature, by itself, tells you how much ultraviolet radiation the lens blocks.

Good sunglasses need to do more than make bright conditions comfortable. They need to protect the eyes from UV exposure while providing a clear, consistent view.


What is ultraviolet radiation?

Ultraviolet radiation, usually shortened to UV, is an invisible part of the energy produced by the sun. Because we cannot see it, we cannot judge the level of UV exposure by how bright or hot the day feels.

UV can still be present in cool conditions and through cloud cover. Repeated exposure contributes to eye damage over time, which is why recognised Australian guidance recommends wearing compliant sunglasses outdoors during daylight hours.

Sunglasses primarily protect against two forms of solar UV:

- UVA, which penetrates more deeply and contributes to cumulative exposure

- UVB, which carries more energy and is particularly damaging to exposed tissue

A properly protective sunglass lens is designed to significantly reduce both.


What does UV400 mean?

UV400 means the lens is designed to block ultraviolet wavelengths up to 400 nanometres, covering the UVA and UVB range.

It is a useful specification because it describes UV filtration rather than lens appearance. A lens can be light grey, dark grey, brown or green and still provide UV400 protection.

That separation matters - Lens colour controls visible brightness. UV filtration controls ultraviolet exposure. They are related parts of the lens, but they are not the same thing.

Every VANDA sunglass lens provides UV400 protection. That applies across both polarised and non-polarised options.


Darker does not necessarily mean safer

One of the most common misconceptions is that the darkest lens must provide the strongest protection.

Lens darkness mainly determines how much visible light reaches the eyes. It can improve comfort in bright conditions, but it does not reliably indicate how much UV the lens blocks. Cancer Council Australia specifically notes that lens darkness and colour do not indicate the level of UV protection.

This is why appearance alone is not enough.

A lightly tinted lens with proper UV filtration may offer strong UV protection. A very dark lens without effective filtration may reduce brightness while providing inadequate protection.

In fact, a dark lens without proper UV filtration can create a false sense of security. Because the visible environment appears darker, the wearer may remain outside longer while still being exposed to UV.

The specification matters more than the shade.


Lens category also matters

Sunglass lenses are commonly grouped into categories according to how much visible light they transmit.

A Category 3 lens is designed for strong sunlight and is widely used in everyday sunglasses. It provides a darker tint suitable for bright outdoor conditions while remaining appropriate for normal daytime use.

All VANDA sunglasses use Category 3 lenses.

Category describes visible-light transmission. It does not replace the need for UV protection. A good sunglass lens should provide both an appropriate tint for the conditions & effective UV filtration.

This is another reason it is worth looking beyond a lens simply being described as “dark.”


Protection is not only about the lens

The lens specification is essential, but the frame and fit also affect how much sunlight reaches the eyes.

Light can enter from above, below and around the sides of a frame. Closer-fitting and wraparound designs generally reduce more of this peripheral exposure. ARPANSA recommends sunglasses that meet the Australian standard and notes the additional protection offered by wraparound styles.

For everyday eyewear, the practical goal is balance:

- lenses that provide proper UV protection

- enough coverage around the eyes
- a fit comfortable enough to wear consistently

The most technically protective pair is of little value if it is uncomfortable and rarely worn.


What should you look for?

When choosing sunglasses, look beyond marketing terms and lens darkness.

The important questions are:

- Do the lenses provide UV400 protection?

- Are they appropriate for strong daylight?

- Do the sunglasses comply with the relevant Australian requirements

- Is the frame comfortable enough for regular wear?

- Do you need polarisation for reflected glare, or non-polarised lenses for reliable screen visibility?

In Australia, sunglasses are covered by mandatory requirements, and AS 1067.1:2016 remains the current standard setting minimum requirements for sunglasses and related eyewear.

These details matter more than price, colour or how dark the lens appears.
