Polarised vs non-polarised

Polarised lenses are often presented as the automatic upgrade when buying sunglasses. They reduce reflected glare, improve comfort in bright conditions and can make outdoor environments appear cleaner and more defined.

But they are not necessarily the right lens for every person or every environment.

The better choice depends on where you wear your sunglasses, what you need to see clearly and how you prefer the world to look through the lens.


What polarised lenses actually do

Bright light does not only reach your eyes directly from the sun. It also reflects from flat surfaces such as water, roads, sand, glass and vehicle bonnets.

This reflected light can create an intense, distracting glare.

A polarised lens contains a filter designed to reduce much of this horizontally reflected light. The result is often a calmer and more comfortable view, particularly around water and other highly reflective surfaces.

Polarised lenses can be especially useful for driving in bright daylights, spending time near the ocean, boating and fishing, outdoor sport & environments with strong surface glare.

The difference is often most noticeable when looking across water or along a sunlit road. Reflections are reduced, allowing greater detail beneath or beyond the glare to become visible.


Does polarised mean better UV protection?

No. Polarisation and UV protection perform different jobs.

Polarisation reduces reflected glare. UV protection helps prevent ultraviolet radiation from passing through the lens.

A non-polarised lens can still provide full UV protection, just as a polarised lens can. The quality and UV specification of the lens matter more than whether it is polarised.

Every VANDA lens provides UV400 protection, whether you choose polarised or non-polarised.

This distinction matters because customers are sometimes led to believe that a darker or polarised lens is automatically safer. That is not necessarily the case.


Why would anyone choose non-polarised lenses?

Non-polarised lenses still reduce brightness and protect the eyes from UV exposure, but they do not filter reflected light in the same way.

For many people, that is completely suitable.

They also have an advantage in environments involving digital displays. Polarised filters can sometimes interact with LCD screens, causing the display to appear darker, distorted or difficult to read from certain angles.

This can affect aircraft instrumentation, some vehicle displays, phones and tablets, marine equipment and other LCD-based screens. The effect varies depending on the screen, its orientation and the angle through which it is viewed.

This is one reason non-polarised sunglasses remain relevant. They provide comfortable sun protection without introducing the same potential display interference.


The view through each lens

Polarised lenses often create a more controlled visual experience in strong reflected light. Water can appear clearer, road glare is reduced and colours may feel more defined.

Non-polarised lenses provide a more natural, uninterrupted view of surfaces and screens. They reduce overall brightness while allowing reflections to remain visible.

Neither experience is universally better.

Some people immediately prefer the reduction in glare provided by polarisation. Others value the consistency and screen compatibility of a non-polarised lens.

The right choice comes down to the environment in which the sunglasses will actually be worn.


Which lens should you choose?

Choose polarised if you regularly experience strong reflected glare and want greater visual comfort around roads, water, sand or other bright surfaces.

Choose non-polarised if you frequently rely on LCD displays, work in an aviation environment, or simply prefer a conventional tinted lens without a polarising filter.

For general everyday wear, both are valid choices.

The frame, UV protection and core lens quality remain consistent. The decision is not between a good lens and a lesser one. It is between two lens types designed for different priorities.
