Why acetate matters
Not all sunglass frames are made from the same material.
Acetate is valued for its depth of colour, smooth finish, adjustability and ability to hold its shape over time. It also allows for details and translucency that are difficult to achieve with standard injection-moulded plastics.
For VANDA, acetate is not simply a visual choice. It influences how the frame feels, how it wears and how it develops its final character.
What is acetate?
Cellulose acetate is a plant-based material made primarily from natural fibres such as cotton and wood pulp.
It is produced in sheets, which are then cut and shaped into frame fronts and temples. This differs from injection-moulded plastic, where liquid material is forced into a mould to create the finished component.
Because acetate begins as a solid sheet, it can be layered, patterned, polished and worked in ways that give the finished frame greater depth and individuality.
Depth of colour
One of acetate’s most distinctive qualities is the way it carries colour.
Solid black can appear rich rather than flat. Translucent crystal can reveal the structure and hardware within the frame. Coffee and tortoise tones can show subtle changes in amber, brown and red as the light moves across them.
This depth comes from the material itself, rather than relying only on a surface coating.
The result is a frame that can look slightly different depending on the lighting, angle and background.
A smoother, more refined finish
Acetate responds well to tumbling and hand polishing. Over several stages, the cut edges are softened and the surfaces are refined until the material develops a smooth, high-gloss finish.
This finishing process is one of the reasons quality acetate frames feel different in the hand. The frame does not simply come out of a mould with its final surface. Its finish is gradually developed through time and repeated workmanship.
Comfort and adjustability
Acetate can be carefully heated and adjusted by a trained optician or eyewear technician.
This allows the bridge, temples and frame curvature to be refined for a more balanced fit. It also makes it possible to correct minor alignment issues over the life of the frame.
The material has a natural weight and substance, but a well-designed acetate frame should still feel comfortable and stable rather than heavy.

Durability and long-term wear
Acetate is chosen not only for how it looks when new, but for how it performs over time.
A quality acetate frame can maintain its shape, colour and finish through regular use when it is properly cared for. Surface marks can often be polished, and the frame can be readjusted if required.
Like any material, acetate is not indestructible. Excessive heat, poor storage and rough handling can affect the frame. However, its ability to be adjusted and refinished gives it advantages over many lower-cost moulded plastics.
Acetate compared with standard plastic
Injection-moulded plastics can be lightweight, consistent and suitable for high-volume production. They also have an important place in eyewear.
Acetate offers something different - greater depth and variation in colour, a more substantial feel, the ability to be hand-finished, greater adjustability, visible layering and translucency and a surface that can be refined and polished.
These qualities make it particularly well suited to frames where material, finish and design are intended to be noticed.
